Purpose: To describe oral hygiene and periodontal conditions in classified individuals, according to the presence of Metabolic Syndrome. Methods and Materials: Descriptive transversal study was done in a sub-sample of 310, 19 years old and up individuals, of the total random sample of the project "Metabolic Syndrome in Adults inMaracaibo". Clinical conditions were evaluated through Simplified oral Hygiene of Green and Vermillion (IHO-S) and Periodontal Treatment Needs Index at the Communities (INTPC). Individuals were classified according the presence of Metabolic Syndrome. Results: The values in every index in both groups were similar, only in the metabolic syndrome group the proportion of individuals with periodontalpockets and debris until 1/3 was significatevily higher to the registered in non metabolic syndrome individuals. Conclusions: In general the studied sample had oral hygiene levels, considered regular and deficient in 90,5% of the cases, which means than 9 of every 10 individuals keep risky conditions for developing of inflammatory processes at their gingival tissues. Resumen

Objetivo: Describir la higiene oral y las condiciones periodontales en individuos clasificados según presencia de Síndrome Metabólico. Materiales y métodos: Estudio transversal descriptivo realizado en una submuestra de 310 de individuos desde 19 años y más, de la muestra aleatoria total del proyecto"Síndrome Metabólico en Adultos del Municipio Maracaibo". Se evaluaron las condiciones clínicas mediante el: Índice de Higiene Oral Simplificado de Green & Vermillon (IHO-S) e Índice de Necesidades de Tratamiento Periodontal en las Comunidades (INTPC) y se clasificaron los individuos según la presencia de Síndrome Metabólico. Resultados: Los valores de cada uno de los índices en ambos grupos fueron muysimilares, solo en el grupo con síndrome metabólico la proporción de individuos con presencia de bolsas periodontales y detritus hasta 1/3 fue significativamente mayor a la registrada en los individuos sin diagnostico de Síndrome Metabólico.

Conclusiones: En general, la muestra estudiada tenía niveles de higiene oral considerados como regulares y deficientes en el 90,5% de los casos, lo cualsignifica que 9 de cada 10 individuos mantienen condiciones de riesgo para el desarrollo de procesos inflamatorios en sus encías.
