When did Alberto Fujimori make a change in Peruvian Democratic history?
The 80’s were synonym of chaos in Peru: the long-awaited transition to democracy finally culminated but brought with itunexpected consequences. After the catastrophic first government of President Alan Garcia, Peru was facing a crisis with several major problems: hyperinflation and terrorism.
During the 90’s, Perusuffered a profound transformation. The reopening to the global economy meant the need of deep changes of the state and social relationships in order to adapt them to the new development strategy, directed"to the outside." The changes of the 90's were not only a result of internal politics, but also obeyed the external pressures of the new era, globalization.
In 1990 the presidential choices werecarried out in Peru. Appearing as candidates "of weight", we had Mario Vargas Llosa, for the Democratic Front (Fredemo, a political alliance between "Movimiento Libertad", "Acción Popular" and theChristian People's Party); Luis Alva Castro, for the APRA; Henry Pease, for "Izquierda Unida"; and Alfonso Barrantes, for "Izquierda Socialista". In addition, there were several small groups that werelooking for an opportunity in the elections. One of these groups was "Cambio 90", with a not-so-well known candidate: the agricultural engineer Alberto Fujimori.
The loss of prestige in which thepolitical parties have felled during the decade of 1980 provoked that the civil majority was inclined for "independent" candidates. This caused Fujimori's sudden popularity, who, in spite of not having agovernment plan, managed to go on to the second electoral round along with Vargas Llosa.
In the second round, Fujimori received the support of various leftist groups and the implicit support of the APRAgovernment of Alan García.
