Interview Gabriel Moreno
Self-confessed “creative, stubborn, passionate, demanding nutcase” Gabriel Moreno thrives on the natural evolution ofthoughts and ideas. Unfurling across his chosen canvas — page, façade or even skin — his tattoo-like creations spin their own stories from a filigree web of Pilot pen lines. Background Ever since I was akid, I have been attracted to lines and light. I guess I was your average boy who spent hours in front of the box, watching cartoons, drawings, comics or movies. Once I got hold of a pencil, theresimply was no stopping me. In school I always got into trouble for drawing on the tables! I ended up studying Fine Arts in Seville and later moved to Madrid. Ever since I finished my portfolio, I havepretty much lived with it tucked under my arm, working non-stop for agencies, magazines and others who allow me to combine the “commercial” aspect with my passion for painting. Skills and TechniquesThere are many people I admire, e. g. Berto Martínez, Alex Trouchut, Serial Cut or Eva Solano, but my biggest passion and inspiration remains beauty in all its shapes and guises; all those little thingsthat shake me up and inject me with the necessary energy to think, feel and do what I do. In a way, I draw what beauty makes me “feel” — illustration gives me the opportunity to make it mine somehowand give it a new form and outlet. I might start from a very simple premise — say, a gesture, the shape of a mouth, a chance encounter on the street or the movement of my wife crossing her legs — butthen my lines start to tangle, intersect and mix, giving rise to a new figure, then another one … a man, a woman, a bird, a bird-man. Creation is my life and that is why it is so easy for me to pour myheart and art into it. And who would have thought that I might grace an LA Times cover or that my illustration would cover one of the most famous buildings of Madrid’s Gran Vía? Inspiration and...
