Industrial Engineering
The idea that society has about industrial engineers, and their work, is that they only work at factories improving their processes. People have an incomplete concept aboutthe purpose, definition and meaning of Industrial Engineering. They're not aware that this branch of engineering is actually used in most commercial, scientific and health oriented activities.
First,lets start by giving a clear and correct definition of Industrial Engineering. Industrial Engineering is responsible for the improvement of processes, not only in factories, but also for processes incompanies, schools, universities, hospitals, and a whole lot of other industries that produce elements necessary for the improvement of quality of life or for the development of systems aimed toincrease the quality of services or products offered. Whenever we want new ways to produce more money, with less effort and cost, we can call it Industrial Engineering.
As we can see, this branch ofengineering is very important to all companies that want to grow and keep up with the market, but, how did this career start? At the beginning of the industrial revolution, few companies thought about thesalary and conditions of their employees. They were really underpaid in relation to their performance. When the Industrial Revolution began, machinery and industries were introduced because the use ofmachines was more effective than the great amount of hours of work of the employees. When these machines were established, people started thinking about ways to improve them, and this is when theIndustrial Engineering started.
Most studies, techniques and developments were made based on the research work of Frederick W. Taylor. For this reason, I would like to talk a bit more about his life andthe contributions he made.
