All throughout my life, I have always been a person regarded by others as a true friend. By constantly being the top student in all of my classes, I gained the reputation of being a studious and trustworthy person. Nevertheless, I would never pass out on any social activity which also showed people that I knew how to balance things. This is how I became the go-to person for issues ranging fromclass problems to personal problems. However, I did not act correctly on an issue that had been developing for a while with my best friend since childhood. In the following paper I will narrate and analyze why I failed my friend and how I could have approached the situation differently.
Monica and I knew each other since we were kids. We got along so well and I really cared for her like a sisterand I know she felt the same way for me. We had the perfect friendship, until she got into a relationship with a guy that was not right for her due to his bad reputation. Somehow she fell furiously in love with him and started ignoring everyone around her. She was consumed by this relationship. My concern on this matter was that she was letting this one person control her life and make her ignoremost of the things that once mattered to her.
This past summer, I decided to act given that I was her best friend and probably up to that point, the only person that still cared for her and was willing to be honest about the issue. I asked her to meet me and, without really analyzing the situation or choosing the best approach according to her personality style, I spilled everything out. The mainproblem was that instead of focusing on her I only thought about my own personal motives and how this was affecting me. I still remember her expression of shock and disgust to what I had just done. There was no way I could go back. I acted on an impulse, guided by my own personal needs and motives rather than realizing that this issue was not only about me. Unfortunately, I hurt her more than whatI would have expected. As of that day, we have not spoken again but every time we see each other I know we are both ashamed. The saddest part is that she did not only lose me, but she lost everyone around her and now she is alone and has become a closed and sad person. I always think about this event and try to understand what went wrong, why had I failed the one person that trusted the most?Through the use of some of the Operational Behavior Frameworks I will approach the situation in an objective manner so that I can understand why my actions were bound to fail from the start, and how to handle a situation like this in the future.
The first thing that I have realized is that Emotional Intelligence plays a fundamental role in our lives. With EQ, we are able to use our emotions in aproductive manner as we are aware of how each step we take will affect ourselves and our counterpart. It is like playing a game of chess knowing what steps are better to take in order to guide our opponent to our victory. It provides us with the base knowledge in order to know who we are in a specific situation and how our skills may be used to their greatest potential. It prepares us to face othersnot only because it opens us to their perspective, but it gives us complete power over how we will act and respond. The five domains that make up EQ are: self-awareness, motivation, self-management, empathy and socials skills. If I would have dominated these fields, I would have been able to understand myself and how I react to certain situations and approach other people.
Beginning withself-awareness, I have realized that when I started the conversation, I was not aware of the role I was playing. I started the discussion with the goal of telling her everything that annoyed me without thinking how this could affect her emotions. By unconsciously criticizing her, I lost my image of a trustworthy person right from the start making her take a defensive position. My attitude also revealed...
