.Using “For” and “Since” in Present Perfect.
Concept:
We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. You CANNOT usethe Present Perfect with specific time expressions such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week, when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that moment, that day, one day, etc. We CAN use the PresentPerfect with unspecific expressions such as: ever, never, once, many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, etc.
Use:
We often use for and since with the present perfect tense.
*We use for to talk about a period of time - 5 minutes, 2 weeks, 6 years.
* We use since to talk about a point in past time - 9 o'clock, 1st January, Monday
Here are some examples:
* I havebeen here for 20 minutes.
* I have been here since 9 o'clock.
* John hasn't called for 6 months.
* John hasn't called since February.
* He has worked in New York for a long time.
