Beauty – the Ugly Truth

We all like to believe that we value people for their personality, intelligence, or accomplishments. However, itseems that wherever we go, success is linked with appearance.
Research shows that good-looking students get higher marks, attractive patients get better care and handsome criminals receive lightersentences than plain-looking people. The home is no exception: according to studies, cute children receive more attention from their mothers than unattractive children do.
In the workplace, attractivepeople get preferential treatment. Studies show that when identically qualified candidates apply for the same job, the better-looking one always gets the job. And once they have the job, the good-lookingworkers of either sex earn 12 per cent more for the same work than their plainer colleagues.
Even in sport, how you look can matter more than how you play. Beautiful tennis player Anna Kournikova ismuch richer and more famous than other, higher-ranked players. And how about footballer David Beckham? It was great looks more than great kicks that got him superstar status.
Some social scientistsbelieve that, like sexism and racism, this is a form of discrimination, and they’ve even given it a name: lookism. Others, however, feel that the preference for better-looking people is a basicinstinct. In prehistoric times, men might have associated a woman’s healthy appearance with her ability to have healthy children. And a tall, strong-looking man was probably perceived as a better protector, and therefore a preferable choice for a partner.
Despite what the research shows, all is not lost. There are many examples of great leaders and business legends who were short or plain. And remember, anyone can increase their attractiveness by being confident, smiling and dressing well.
