Most people live along the coasts in sixmain cities: Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and Darwin. Human economic developments surrounding these six cities do not have the same negative impact overall onAustralia’s ecological status. Unlike in the U.S. where most natural resources (rivers, lakes, mountain ranges, etc.) were developed to provide electricity or recreational opportunity, inAustralia most of its interior land remains hostile and resistant to any human efforts in conquering it. Over the last 40,000 years the Aborigines of Australia are the only human groupable to live off the land and most researchers would attribute their success to their ability of being in harmony with the land.
Perhaps the biggest advantage of Australia is thelesson that we learn as humans to live productively and unobtrusively with the land. The valuable lesson is that modern economic activities can be deployed peacefully along with nature.
