To what extent are you satisfied with your organization’s effectiveness in identifying future leaders?

To what extent do you agree that your leaders devote a significant amount of time to hiring and developing talent?While in some companies talent management is seen as primarily an HR responsibility, in Most Admired Companies people development is viewed as a core accountability for line managers. Leaders devote a significant portion of their time to talent management and providing ongoing coaching to their people. As a result, leaders in Most Admired Companies report that they have a better understandingof the capabilities of managers at all levels and do a better job of matching individuals to jobs, based both on the required skills associated with various roles and the career objectives and motivations of their people. | |

To what extent would you agree that your leaders work collaboratively acrossorganizational lines to solve business problems?

Clarifying responsibilities is critical to managing interdependencies, but so too is fostering a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and trust. Most Admired Companies are markedly more positive than their peers regarding the extent to which leaders work collaboratively across organizational lines to solve business problems. "This company is run by ateam," says Fred Smith, Chairman and CEO of FedEx, which is among the top ten World's Most Admired Companies. "It has to be run by a team. If you have people that won't get with the program, you cannot keep them around."

To what extent would you agree that decisions are generally made at the right level (i.e., where the most appropriate knowledge and expertise resides)?

Our findings suggestthat Most Admired Companies promote higher levels of empowerment among managers and employees than their peers. They are considerably more likely to report that decisions are made at the right level in the organization (i.e., where the most appropriate knowledge and expertise resides). And they also have a more positive view of the extent to which managers and employees are encouraged to takereasonable risks in an attempt to increase organizational and personal effectiveness.

To what extent would you agree that your leaders surround themselves with people who will challenge them on their thinking?

To identify the optimal solutions to problems, leaders need to encourage sharing of information, ideas, and perspectives. Most Admired Companies are more likely than their peers to reportthat leaders are honest about the realities of the business with each other and in communications with employees. Most Admired Companies are also more likely to indicate that leaders are not afraid to surround themselves with people who will challenge them on their thinking.
