KRASHEN’S THEORY
Acquisition-Learning hypothesis: this is the most fundamental hypothesis in Krashen’s theory.
It has two independent systems which are:
* Acquisition: it is a subconsciousprocess that requires natural communication in which the speaker focuses on communication, not on accuracy.
Example: when a kid is talking about what he/she is doing at that moment.
* Learning: thisis a conscious process where the speaker is conscious about the production of the language.
Example: when a kid is talking and is thinking on what he is saying, he is thinking about the rules he/shemust use.
Monitor hypothesis: it says that the acquisition system is the utterance initiator and the learning system is the monitor. Monitor means that the second language learner has time, focuseson correctness and knows the rule. Krashen says that the role of monitor should be minor and for polishing the language. It is to the first hypothesis, since the attention should be on acquisition notin learning.
Krshen has given levels regarding to the “monitor” use:
* Over-users: use monitor all the time Introverts and
perfectionists.
* Under-users: learners who prefer not to usetheir knowledge. Extroverts.
* Optimal-users: use monitor appropriately
Example: when a kid is speaking to his/her family, he/she is not concerned about the correctness, but about the messagehe/she wants to convey.
Natural Order hypothesis: it says that grammatical acquisition follows a “natural order” which is predictable. It is based on research, and though not all language learnerslearn the same thing first, there is a similarity on which they base their prediction. However, Krashen believes that there shouldn’t be an order in teaching grammar when the goal is language acquisition.Example: in a kindergarten room a girl learns first to conjugate in past and her friend does to, but this does not mean that all the kids in the room will learn to conjugate past tense at the same...
