In the 1960s and 1970s the USA was envolved in aconflict in Vietnam. Becuase many
Pepole opposed the war, Vietnam veterans were not honored as other war veterans had
been honored . Jan scruggs a Vietnam veteran thought that the 58,000 pepole who diedin the war desereve to be remembered .

The memorial was permitted by congress in recognition of the men and women of the
armed forces of the united staes of america who served in the Vietnamwar . The law
did not say anything of how it would look like. The memorial was determined to bring
the united states of america together. There they did a contest on who would win. Cause
scruggsdid not know how to model it

The contest was open to all americans and the winner would receive $20,000. Although
The real prize would be that the Winners creation would become part ofamerican
history. The contest was announced on october 1980 brought astonishing results. The
contest had a few rules. The design had to have the names of the pepole who died, high
artostic merit, mustbe harmonious, take place in history and must be durable buildable
and not hard to main tain

Maya Lin designed a model at the same spot it was gonna be built. She wanted to make
pepole feelsafe yet at the same time remind pepole that they were dead.
When Maya Lin returned to Yale she made a model out of clay. Maya Lin showed her
Design to the professor and he liked it. A month laterMaya Lin was the winner of the
Contest

Jan scruggs, a nam veteran, thought that veterans deserved more honor so he decided to
Make a memorial. He struggled to get the Rights for his commaradsbut in the end he
did it. Scruggs did not know how this memorial would be. Scruggs decided to do a
