Es una cuestión arduamente discutida por los científicos modernos. Los científicos no tienen dudas de que el ser humano no se originó en América y que por lo tanto fue poblada por hombres provenientes de otra parte. Existe un cierto consenso, aunque no unánime, sobre el hecho de que América se habría poblado desde Siberia (Asia). Más allá de ese consenso relativo, enla primera década del siglo XXI la comunidad científica discute apasionadamente la fecha, ruta y cantidad de oleadas migratorias que poblaron el continente americano.
