"Bravery and courage"


Policarpa Salavarrieta (Guaduas, January 26th , 1796 -Santafé de Bogotá, November 14th, 1817) She also was know like " La Pola", she grew up in a wealthy family, that had enough and was respected in the village, her father, Joaquín Salavarrieta, was a mandevoted to agriculture and trad. Her mother, Mariana Ríos, was a woman dedicated to the home. The family home in Guaduas, today is a museum.

The family Salavarrieta Ríos moved to live in Bogotá in1797. In 1802 appeared a smallpox epidemic in the capital, because of the smallpox died the father, mother and two brothers of Policarpa. After this suffering, the family separated: José María yManuel entered the Augustinian community, Ramón y Francisco Antonio traveled to Tena to start work in a farm; Catarina, the older sister, decided to move back to Guaduas, about 1804, with his two youngerbrothers: Policarpa and Bibiano. They established at the home of their godmother Margarita Beltrán, until Catarina married to Domingo Garcia, and her two brothers went to live with the new couple.
Suparticipación durante la época independentista estuvieron especialmente vrelacionadas con el ejército patriota de los Llanos; recibía y mandaba mensajes, compraba material de guerra, convencíaindividualmente a jóvenes y les ayudaba a unirse a los grupos patriotas. Experta en espionaje, Policarpa se volvió rápidamente indispensable para la causa patriota. Su compañero de trabajo más importante fueAlejo Sabaraín. Sabaraín ya había luchado junto a Nariño en el sur, y había sido capturado en 1816; al año siguiente cumplió la pena, y libre, se dedicó al espionaje. Las actividades de Policarpa...
