Chemistry is the science of matter, the study of materials from which the world is made, and means of understanding the laws governing the natural word. It is the basis for manufacturing newmaterials, and a source of wealth through the products of industry. Chemistry is at the center of the scientific and technological developments of the last two centuries, developments which have changed thecourse of history. Chemistry is a source of endless fascination and rewardfor an enquiring mind. Some people find enjoyment in preparing new material, some in discovering the chemical basis for understanding biology, some in using mathematical skills to solve chemicalproblems, and some in applying chemical techniques in an industrial environment. The boundariesof chemistry are indistinct. It merges with physics, with biology, with medicine, and with many areas of engineering. It is assumed that students using this guides are taking concurrent courses in claculus and physics, and have some knowledge of chemistry fromtheir previous studies. Science is an important part of the liberal arts. Studentsshould come away from this chemistry course with the feeling that chemistry is a vital subject. Along with discussions of what chemistry tells about the world, there are glimpses of its human dimension.Seeing the evidence, reasoning, and human intuition behind some important chemical insights reduces considerably the misperception that science cannot be understood nonscientists.
