El acto de amamantar es un derecho de toda mujer, esencial para la crianza de sus hijos. Los cambios socioculturales observados en la población chilena asociados con la salud, en algunos casos están relacionados con la dieta y la nutrición; factores como el crecimiento fetal, peso al nacer, crecimiento posnatal, alimentación materna durante el embarazo y el tiempo de duración de lalactancia materna, pueden impactar en la salud en etapa adulta. La preparación de los padres y las madres como cuidadores de sus hijos, puede incidir en la atención que podría brindar la familia y en facilitar la adaptación del niño y la niña a la vida hogareña, especialmente si presentan dificultades en el proceso de amamantamiento, problemas de succión-deglución, cantidad de flujo lácteo,prematurez, acogida materna, decisión personal de la madre para amamantar, etc. El amamantamiento es instintivo y aprendido por la madre y el niño. Los cuidados de enfermería del niño y el autocuidado que debe aprender y manejar la madre durante los primeros días del posparto, pueden ayudar a solucionar las dificultades y problemas de la madre y el bebé en relación con la lactancia. La aplicación delas diferentes etapas del proceso de atención de enfermería por el profesional a cargo del binomio madre-hijo, facilitará la instalación de la lactancia materna. El aumento sostenido de la lactancia materna se puede obtener con la promoción mediante diversas acciones educativas, recreativas, informativas, etc., con la participación de estudiantes, profesionales, organizaciones voluntarias proamamantamiento y la comunidad. Para una adecuada gestión de cuidados y promoción de la lactancia materna, es indispensable la participación/intervención de la madre y del padre desde el momento del nacimiento, las redes de apoyo y el entorno familiar, junto al equipo de salud.

ABSTRACT
The act of breast feeding is a right ofevery woman, essential for the up bringing of their sons/ daughters.The socio cultural changes observed in the Chilean population associated with health in some cases are related to diet and nutrition; factors such as fetal growth, birth weight, postnatal growth, maternal nutrition during pregnancy and duration of the maternal breast feeding, could impact on health in adulthood. The preparationof the fathers and mothers as care takers of their sons/daughters could affect the care that a family could offer and facilitate in the adaptation of the child in his/her home life, especially if they have difficulties in the process of breast feeding, suck-swallow problems, milk flow rate, pre-maturity, maternal host, personal decision of the mother to breast feed etc. Breast feeding isinstinctive and learnt by the mother and the child. The nursing care and self care of the child should be learnt and managed by the mother during the first days after delivery may help in solving difficulties and problems of the mother and the baby in relation to breast feeding. The application of the different stages of the process of nursing care by the professional in charge of the mother _son couldfacilitate the installation of the breast feeding. The steady increase of the maternal breast feeding could be obtained by promoting through different educational, re-creative, informative, activities with the participation of the students, professionals, voluntary organizations, pro-breast feeding and the community.
