The story called “ Shoothing an Elephant” was written by George Orwell.The mainidea of the article is the actions of the Burmese people and Europeans in Burma. George Orwell, the protagonist of this story,lives in Burma and he is a police officer. There is a bit of tensionbetween the locals and the foreign law enforcement since the British has taken over the country,so the Burmese people hate him. One day he is under pressure to shoot an elephant by the Burmese people.Furthermore; Orwell an English police officer is hated by all the burmese people because of social and political reasons like the English people are trying to colonize Burma.That’s why he says “Theinsults hooted after me when I was at a safe distance,got badly on my nerves ” .With this important point that he is making here,it is obvious that the most important point in this essay is thesymbolism of the Burmese people with Orwell as the police officer. He can observe every bad thing that the imperialism makes.He is symbolic because it is a very important figure in imperialism as it is aperson who is watching all the massacres that imperialism does to all its citizens,like slavery, and must perform all these actions without protest. He also has an important role in the socialpyramid, however; he has no power to change the rules.He hates his job and he claims “I hated it more bitterly than i can perhaps make clear.”. He doesn’t like his job because he thinks that imperialism isvery malignant. The burmese people doesn’t hate him for who he really is,they hate him because he is an English person.
