NECK PAIN OR STIFFNESS
Causes
Muscle strain and spasm. You may have pain and stiffness in your neck, but no other symptoms. Muscle strain and spasm are the most frequent causes. An old neck injuryalso may be a factor. Try self-care.
Arthritis You may have pain and stiffness in your neck. You also may have a limited range of motion. Symptoms of arthritis vary depending on the type. See yourdoctor.
Pinched Nerve You may have pain in your neck that extends down your arm and is limited to one side. You also may have numbness or tingling in your arm or hand. See your doctor.
Herniated DiskYou may have neck pain that´s worse with movement. You may feel pain, numbness or tingling. a herniated, or slipped, disk is a protrusion of the central part of one of the flat, circular pads foundbetween the bones of the spine. See your doctor.
Meningitis You may have intense neck pain, accompanied by fever, severe headache, and nausea or vomiting, drowsiness or confusion. And pain in youreyes when you look at bright light. Your neck may be so stiff that it´s difficult to touch your chin to your chest. Meningitis is a rare but serious cause of neck pain. Seek emergency help.
Other CausesMay include central nervous system bleeding, mumps strep throat or swollen glands.

Self-care
-For neck pain you've had a while or that has returned, warmth may help Apply a moist-heat pad orwarm, moist towel for 15 to 20 minutes, three to four times a day. If moist heat isn't available, take a warm bath or shower.
-Try an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen,naproxen sodium or aspirin.
Prevention
-Sleep on a firm mattress. If you up with neck pain in the morning, sleep on a thin, feather pillow (not foam rubber), or try using none at all.
-When you feelyour muscles tense up, take a break from what you're doing. Massage your neck, rotate your head and take deep breaths.
-try gentle neck exercises.
