Muammar Gaddafi, the ruler of Libya, deployed tanks and fighter jets in an attempt to put down a popular uprising, ignited by street protests, that started in the east of the country and spread toTripoli, the capital. Rebels held large swathes of territory after taking heavy losses estimated to be at least 1,000 killed and many more injured. The UN Security Council demanded an end to theviolence.

The founding fathers of a new Libya have gathered. in this green mountain town, perched above the coastalsand- flats, they plan to write a new constitution and restore civilian rule.
Delegates to the new assembly paint Libya's future as a liberal parliamentary democracy, and have decked beida'sparliament building in portraits of King Idris and Benghazi claim to be running civilian committees, and have called for the restoration of the 1952 constitution, amended to uphold a multiparty republic.Blaming outsiders
"They care more about oil than our blood" says a Tobruk history teacher.
Libya oil industry operators are now threatening to destroy pipelines and cut supplies to Europe, IfEuropean states fail to intervene to end Mr Gaddafi's rule.
