Introduction
Group processes are especially significant in twenty-first century schools, business, and homes, because of the society’s complexity; this is meant as the variation of ideas, cultures, habits, ways of expression, etc. All of these aspects are presented in student’s life in a good or bad way, depending on the climate where they grow up. Thus, when a teacher is in the classroom,he should be able of noticing all of the previous aspects in order to know how to manage and control the students, one he learns about the group, he should work with group projects and cooperative teamwork, creative curriculum, positive classroom climate, positive attitudes, interpersonal skills, and empathy. They are important ingredients of a classroom, where students and teachers mustcommunicate successfully to each other in order to to be productive and profitable in two contexts; getting meaningful learning and being ready for facing real situations.
Since nowadays it is quite important to take into consideration all the aspects related to “group process”, this paper will present some theories and also an analysis about one of my groups, based on a sociogram.
Theoreticalframework
It is understood that the groups should be similar among them with the purpose of being successful at the end of any activity, so the process of a group is to get a collection of interdependence, and the individuals’ interaction with reciprocal influence over one another. Interdependent means the participants mutually depend on one another to get work done; the teacher's part is toteach as the students strive to learn. A group is also defined by its goals and structures. Goals are jointly held outcomes toward which group members work; structures are group roles taken regularly by members as they carry out the work. Groups seek to accomplish task or work goals and social-emotional or morale goals.
In the following pages, there will be some data and some of my experiencesas a teacher that can be useful for teachers at the moment of interacting with their groups:
A) The heart of a teacher: identity and integrity in teaching
Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from identity and integrity of a teacher. Identity refers to something concrete, in other words it can be seen the appearance of a person, so it is the outside. Integrityrefers to something abastract that is the real person, his /her own personality. I remember that once I had a student who was very lazy during the course, he did not do anything in the classroom, but when he took the first exam he got an excellent grade, so I was surprised because what he showed me in the classroom was not his real integrity.
There are two aspects more that the authormentions on this reading; onstage and backstage. The first one refers to an arena of visibility where I wanted to perform and become known, but also an arena where my competence would be tested and surely found wanting; so it is what as a teacher we are doing right now. For example in my case; every day I try to be patient with the students who need more than two explanations. The second one refers tothe fear of being exposed in the classroom. I remember that my first classes as something frustrating because I was always nervous at the moment of being in front of the students; I just did not feel ready for giving that step in my profession. The worst of this experience was that sometimes students asked me about the meaning of a word and I did not know the definition.
B) The socialpsychological perspective
There are seven schools of thought in social psychology which are summarized them here, giving attention to each relates to the classroom.
Perspective 1: Systematic nature of groups.
System refers to any organized part of an educational institution that is working to achieve certain goals and that has a large amount of internal interaction and interdependence. For...
