Chapter 15: Lucky Diamonds.
In this chapter Saul Plotnick give us the example of his company that sell diamonds and want to enter into Chinese market. He has to face obstacles bythe Chinese government, regulations and policies of that market.
The Chinese market has a lot of opportunities but people who make business must know all about cultural and behavesfrom this market. Also in this case, the company of Saul is directly under control of De Beers because they are his main supplier, so he has to adequate about what they say.
Theauthor comments that Saul was crazy to make this business real and didn’t hear advices from anyone about many things that he would know about the people and market.
After a visit toShanghai’s diamonds bourse, they went to visit other jewelry stores to check competitors and saw that many stores offers diamonds that look “too nice”, as he said. That was somethingSaul didn’t like. Also they saw that Chinese preferred to postpone major purchases until they had accumulate a more substantial amount of wealth, so will going to be difficult torecord great sales numbers and make business profitable.
They identify that people in streets also offered fake jewelry and other high value things like Rolex watches, also fakes, andpeople bought them because their lowest price.
When they met a woman dedicated to offer safaris to wealthy people, she comment that many customers felt guilty to spent $100,000 onsafari, and when they want to take a souvenir, she takes care of sending at their home.
Saul and his brother, was disagreed about the experience in diamonds of the author, so when theyflew back to Europe, they found someone else for the business. The author comment that this person finally stole them and when he was caught there was not any diamonds or money.
