Luminescence
First: what is the luminescence?
Luminescence is emission of light by a substance not resulting from heat; it is thus a form of cold body radiation. It can be caused by chemicalreactions, electrical energy, subatomic motions, or stress on a crystal. This distinguishes luminescence from incandescence, which is light emitted by a substance as a result of heating. Historically, radioactivity was thought of as a form of "radio-luminescence", although it is today considered to be separate since it involves more than electromagnetic radiation. The term 'luminescence' was introducedin 1888 by Eilhard Wiedemann.[1][2]
But we are more interested in the quimioluminiscene that ir the result of a chemical reaction
A standard example of chemiluminescence in the laboratory setting isthe luminol test. Here, blood is indicated by luminescence upon contact with iron in hemoglobin. When chemiluminescence takes place in living organisms, the phenomenon is called bioluminescence. Alight stick emits light by chemiluminescence.
And our project is of the light sticks and their reaction.
Luminol in an alkaline solution with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of iron or copper,[1] oran auxiliary oxidant,[2] produces chemiluminescence. The luminol reaction is
Luminol + H2O2 → 3-APA[◊] → 3-APA + light
In a chemiluminescent reaction, the direct product of a reaction is deliveredin an excited electronic state, which then decays into an electronic ground state through either fluorescence or phosphorescence, depending on the spin state of the electronic excited state formed. This is possible because chemical bond formation can occur on a time scale faster than electronic transitions, and therefore can result in discrete products in excited electronic states.Chemiluminescence differs from fluorescence in that the electronic excited state is derived from the product of a chemical reaction rather than the more typical way of creating electronic excited states, namely...
