Machiavellians are characterized by three main values: Deceit, convenience and cunning. From the times of Machiavelli to modern times. The ideas of ‘theprince’ have influenced many politic leaders; main influenced by his two most important phrases ‘the end justifies the means’ and by one of his most important phrases ‘it is better to be feared than loved,if you cannot be both’. One of the most influenced continents is America; in this essay I’m going to explain the examples of Machiavellian influences in Latin America.
As we can see one of the LatinAmerican countries with Machiavellian politic influences is Cuba, as we can see Fidel Castro is not so ‘loved’ as we can tell, but he is feared by some people and loved by some other people. Herather is feared than loved because if all the people love him maybe someday they will have the confidence to kick him out of the presidency of his socialist government. But being feared is better becausepeople will never have the guts to kick him out.
It can also be seen that in Ecuador the actual president Rafael Correa is doing many things to take advantage of his politic power, one clear examplecan be the referendum, he is doing it to take advantage of the government and make the changes he wants according to people’s opinion, that’s a main influence from Machiavelli’s most famous phrase:‘the end justifies the means’, being the referendum the mean and the changes in the government the end.
Another great Latin American ruler under the influence of Machiavelli that worth its mention isHugo Chávez. He is feared by most of the people of Venezuela but for all the good things he has done for the country he has been a good leader so far, here we can also see that the end justifies themeans, and that Chavez is better been feared than been loved because with the fear and the respect of people he is free to do whatever he pleases to do.
