MAHATMA GANDHI

Mahatma Gandhi (Porbandar, October 2, 1869 - New Delhi, January 30, 1948) was a lawyer, Indian political thinker.

Gandhi was a bad student in his youthat Porbandar, barely managing to pass the entrance exam at the University of Bombay in 1887.

Took the opportunity that presented itself to study in England, a country he considered the "cradleof philosophers and poets , the center of civilization. "He studied law at University College London. He returned to India after getting his degree to practice law in England.

Since1918, figured openly in front of the Indian nationalist movement. Introduced innovative methods of social control as the hunger strike, and its programs rejected armed struggleand preached ahimsa (nonviolence) as a means to resist British rule.

Imprisoned several times, soon became a national hero. In 1931 participated in the London Conference, where he claimed the independence of India. Heleaned in favor of the right of the Congress party, and had conflicts with his disciple Nehru

Its moral influence on the development of the talks that prepared the independence of Indiawas considerable, but the separation with Pakistan as deeply discouraged.

During his years in South Africa, Gandhi drew inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita and in the books of Tolstoy,particularly in the Kingdom of God is within you.

The most significant phrases were:
- Our reward is in the effort and not outcome. Full effort is full victory.
-There is no road to peace,peace is the way.
-Violence is the fear of the ideals of others.

On January 30, 1948, when Gandhi was addressing a prayer meeting, was assassinated in Birla Bhavan in New Delhi, at 78 yearsof age by Nathuram Godse.
