Keeping in touch.
 
The problem that most of you will now face is how to maintain your English. There are lots of different ways in which you can keep in touch with English in the coming year(s).If you don’t have regular contact with the language, then in a couple of years you’ll find that you’ve become rusty (and as a result your confidence will suffer). The most effective way to maintain,or improve, your level, is by going to classes in a language school. If you can’t do this, think about getting a private teacher or a conversation class.
 
Check out your local area for‘English/Irish/Scottish pubs’ where you can practice English with the recently arrived bar workers or clients (this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship…). If you live in Barcelona, or visit itregularly, get a copy of “Metropolitan”, which has lots of ads for language services. There are some bars that offer free conversation sessions. Have fun in English…
 
If you’re a cinema goer, try to see atleast 1 film a month in VOSE (VOSC?). If your video player has “sistema dual”, watch as many programmes as possible on TV3 or Canal 33 in English. There’s always something interesting on. DVDs arealso a great way to practise, although it depends on the film (Jackie Chan or Van Damme will not help you much, and the Matrix is unintelligible in any language). The DVDs that come with your Sundaynewspaper usually have a good linguistic standard, whether it’s National Geographic, Oliver and Benji or James Dean.
 
Read as much as possible in English- buy a magazine or newspaper on a regularbasis. Find something related to your interests, or your job, and get a copy every month. There’s enough reading in “The Economist”, “Rolling Stone” or “Cosmopolitan” to keep you busy for a week, atleast. Impress your fellow commuters on the metro by reading the “Times”.
