A comienzos del siglo XIX, Coquimbo era apenas unpequeño poblado de pescadores, no obstante, el ferrocarril que unió los yacimientos minerales con el puerto y las fundiciones de cobre permitieron su crecimiento. A mediados de siglo se construye laIglesia de San Pedro, el principal centro religioso del poblado.
En 1850, durante la administración de Manuel Bulnes se aprobaron los planos para la ciudad; y, en el gobierno de José Joaquín Pérez,mediante una ley de 24 de septiembre de 1864 se creó el Departamento de Coquimbo. La Municipalidad de Coquimbo fue creada el 5 de mayo de 1867, siendo José Joaquín Edwards Ossandón su primer alcalde.1 Se leotorga la calidad de ciudad el 4 de septiembre de 1879, durante el gobierno de Aníbal Pinto.
Coquimbo is a port city and commune - spa Furthermore , capital of the Elqui Province , Coquimbo Region, Chile . Bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean , the north by the municipality of La Serena , east to the town of Andacollo , and south to the town of Ovalle. It is part of a conurbation withthe neighboring town of La Serena .
In the early nineteenth century , Coquimbo was just a small fishing village , however , the railroad that linked the port with mineral deposits and copper smeltersallowed growth. By mid-century built the Church of St. Peter, the main religious center of the village.
