Abstract: The collection ofmoluscos, Chile and other parts of the world, deposited in the present dependencies of the Laboratory of Malacología of the National Museum of Historia Natural (MNHN) of Chile, is the result of a process of harvesting that began with the founders of the natural history of Chile from 1782, with Juan I. Molina, Claudio Gay in 1854 and R. A. Philippi as of 1853, among other naturalists. Important itwas the contribution made by D’Orbigny that made descriptions of malacofauna of Chile, observed in his expeditions Latin America, between 1826 and 1833. At the moment, the collection is in a stage of organization, cataloguing and recovery of pieces originally described by Rudolfo A. Philippi, as well as of numerous donations and exchanges that the naturalist received being director of the Museum.The study and documentation of the collections of moluscos have been a slow process and have obeyed, preferredly, to the development of works in those groups of greater interest of the investigators who are been in charge of the Phylum. As of year 1997, a new process began, with the rating of rooms of work and deposit (Room Collection Philippi and Chilena). Also its location in the present taxonomyis had boarded and their conditions of conservation are improving. Many of the present lots of terrestrial, marine moluscos and of continental waters and insulares must be reviewed. Numerous specimens of other latitudes exist that have been entered the data base. Therefore, according to the bibliography consulted and data on collections in the country, they are registered for Chile, six classes,34 orders, 254 families, 596 sorts and 1492 species. La colección de moluscos, de Chile y de otras partes del mundo, depositada en las actuales dependencias del Laboratorio de Malacología del Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (MNHN) de Chile, es el resultado de un proceso de recolección que seinició con los fundadores de la historia natural de Chile. En 1782, Juan I. Molina, dió información sobre once especies de moluscos en Historia Natural y Civil de Chile. D’Orbigny (1835-1843) en su libro Voyage L’Amerique Meridionale, realizó descripciones de malacofauna de Chile obser-

vadas en sus expediciones a América Latina entre 1826 y 1833. En 1854, Claudio Gay, con la colaboración delnaturalista Huppé, describió moluscos de Chile, publicados en el tomo octavo de zoología de la Historia Física y Política de Chile. Este material malacológico fue llevado probablemente al Museo de Historia Natural de París, por el naturalista a su regreso a Francia. Posteriormente, en 1853, llega al país Rodulfo A. Philippi, medico alemán, contratado como naturalista por el gobierno de Chile ynombrado director y conservador del

Museo Nacional. En este período se inicia la formación de la colección de moluscos de Chile, con especímenes traídos por el científico desde Europa, con numerosos holotiposoriginales y otro material obtenido en las colectas que realizó en sus diferentes expediciones a lo largo del país (Gotschlich 1904).

Actualmente, la colección está en una etapa de organización, catalogación y recuperación de piezas originalmente descritas por Rudolfo A. Philippi, así como de numerosas donaciones y canjes que el naturalista recibió siendo director del Museo Nacional Historia...
