According to mythology Vishnuite, Hiranyakashipu was the king of demons. Thanks to the intense austerities he had performed, the god Brahma had granted him a boon: it could not be killed during theday or night, inside or outside a house on earth or in heaven, neither by man nor animal or by astra ('gun') and shastra (sentences of sacred Scripture). So he became a king arrogant, and attacked theHeavens and the Earth. He demanded that people stop worshiping gods and instead to worship him. Despite this, Prajlad (a son of Hiranyakashipu) was a devotee of god Vishnu. Despite several threatsfrom Hiranyakashipu, Prajlad continued offering prayers to Vishnu. He was poisoned but the poison in his mouth became nectar. It was trampled by elephants, but was unharmed. They put in a room withpoisonous snakes and survived. All of Hiranyakashipu's attempts to kill his son failed.

Finally, he ordered Prajlad sit on a pyre on the lap of her sister, Joliká, who could not die by fire under amagic shawl. Prajlad accepted the command of his father, and kept reciting the names of Vishnu. When a fire, each saw in amazement as the shawl flew rose, deprotecting to Joliká, then burned to deathwhile Prajlad survived when the shawl covered it completely. The fire is celebrated as Joliká Joli.

After Vishnu appeared in the form of Narasimha (who is half man and half lion) and killedHiranyakashipu at dusk (it was day or night), in the portico of the palace (which was not inside or outside), holding on your lap (so I was not in heaven or on earth) and dismembered with his claws (which areneither astra nor shastra).

In Vrindavan and Mathura, where he grew the god Krishna, the festival is celebrated for 16 days (up Ranga Panchami) in commemoration of divine love between Radha andKrishna).
