FEARS BEFORE SIGNING THE NAFTA
I think the main reason the NAFTA found American opponents was the cultural shock. The way Americans used to think about our people made them fear about theconsequences this agreement would bring. Indeed, many of their fears became true: for example, the uncontrolled migratory flow. The NAFTA had a huge impact in Mexican industry; the new established factoriesneeded more labor and some people from the crop fields migrated to the cities searching a better job. This caused the inattention of the crop fields, and people that still worked on them found it veryhard to maintain the crops because there were not many people to help. Then, they had to do something to support their family, so they migrated to the U.S.
Another fear was that of the knownMexican corruption. U.S citizens were aware of the corruption in the Mexican government, so it cost them a bit to believe that the statutes found in the agreement would be followed exactly as they werewritten and that they wouldn’t be used to commit crimes. However, as in the previous point, their fear became reality. The free flow of exports within Mexican and U.S. borderline became a platform fordrug cartels to bring in the U.S. drugs coming from Central and South America, all of this sponsored by the Mexican government, which only target was that of avoiding troubles with this kind ofcriminals.
On the other side, Mexican NAFTA opponents’ biggest fear was that the new agriculture policies and reforms would bring the crop fields down when American farm products were imported, sinceagriculture was a relatively larger sector in Mexico than in the United States. The fear was based on the premise that Mexican agriculture was characterized by small-scale enterprises, relatively lowproductivity, and high trade barriers on the main crops produced by subsistence farmers.
