The Highlands is located in the extreme north of Chile at approximately between 3.500 and 6.000 meters above the sea level. Thisplace is known by its biological diversity, lakes, volcanoes, swamps (called “bofedales”), fauna and vegetation which are protected by national parks and monuments, such as National Lauca Park, Islugaand Salar de Surire. Nowadays a traditional society, the Aymaras, live in the Highlands. They periodically meet to celebrate traditional ceremonies to honor their ancestors.
Azapa valley is an oasiswith a river called San José. In this river water runs only in summer, during the altiplanic winter. This valley produces several fruits, which are exported. This zone is very rich in olives andtomatoes. In the kilometer 13 is placed the San miguel de Azapa’s archaeological museum where we can find the chinchorro’s mummies, the oldest in the world with 7.600 years. Another cultural manifestation inAzapa are the geoglyphs of Cerro sagrado (sacred hill), in Pampa Alto, which represent human and animal figures , for example snakes , lizzards and camelids.
Lluta’s valley is located about 5kilometers north of Arica. Named after a river called LLuta. It has an archeological value because of its big geoglyphs, the most known geoglyphs are: the frog, the eagle and lluta’s giants. You can visitPoconchile village, used as a resting place on the Andean rout. There you can find San Geronimo church built in 1604, which has a grave yard.
