Suspense in Pride & Prejudice & character development
Anxious uncertainty about what may happen is a way of defining suspense. It is an essential factor in a novel that should be present in most storylines inorder to keep the reader hooked. The author Jane Austen has bee able to provide a great deal of this in her novel Pride and Prejudice due to the constant uncertainty of what may happen next. The story is simple, yet it contains complex characters, which at times can be very stubborn and proud. The main theme of this novel is argued to be love because of the events that lead to Elizabeth Bennet andMr. Darcy’s union. Certain events define many turning points throughout the novel that are not only about the couple mentioned before but also about the rest of the Bennet family and certain acquaintances from both sides. Also the fact that no relationship between any suspected couples happen until the end of the novel causes anxiety and makes the reader curious since one never knows how it mightend. In addition, both families come from different social and economic backgrounds so being together causes an outrage throughout the novel between family and friends as well as money related marriage. Finally, suspense is a vital part of this novel and if there was none present, the turning points that make the story flow would not exist therefore making the story flat, boring and predictable. This novel has been a best seller for years because of its content and its well written plot and conflicts that relate to the time and setting of where the story takes place, the characters come to life representing an old society not forgotten but long changed.
An appealing story needs elaborate characters in order for it to make sense and add certain moods to scenes and to the novel itself. Inthe case of Pride and Prejudice the main characters are Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. This is because the story revolves around them and they are the characters that have the most obstacles to overcome since this is a true case of a love-hate relationship. Additionally Mrs. Bennet, Jane Bennet, which are Elizabeth’s mother and sister respectively, and Mr. Bingley who is Mr. Darcy’s best friendare also very important characters that contribute greatly to the novel and the way it evolves. The personalities of each of these characters are very different. In the first place, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are both very stubborn people who like doing things their way. However, he is proud and reserved so he will only speak to people whom he is acquainted to. For example this quote at a ball whereMr. Darcy refused to dance with anyone and later on realized he was falling for Elizabeth Bennet. “Mr. Darcy had at first scarcely allowed [Elizabeth] to be pretty; he had looked at her without admiration at the ball; and when they next met, he looked at her only to criticize.  But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she hardly had a good feature in her face, than hebegan to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes.  To this discovery succeeded some others equally mortifying.  Though he had detected with a critical eye more than one failure of perfect symmetry in her form, he was forced to acknowledge her figure to be light and pleasing; and in spite of his asserting that her manners were not those of thefashionable world, he was caught by their easy playfulness.  Of this she was perfectly unaware; to her he was only the man who made himself agreeable nowhere, and who had not thought her handsome enough to dance with.” (6.12) And the other hand Elizabeth is a person filled with prejudice and isn’t afraid to speak her mind even in matters that don’t concern her. It shows similarities between them both and...
