Overdoing it.

Author: Anton Chekhov (1860-1904), Russia. Wrote more than a thousand stories.

Characters:Main: Glev Smirnov (the land surveyor), Klimushka (carriage’s driver)

Secondary: Station guard.

Narrator: Fully omniscient.

Setting: Gnilushka and road to Devkino.

Summary of the plot:The story began when Glev Smirnov arrives to the Gnilushka train station trying to get to Devkino which was around twenty miles from there. Glev first met the station guard who told him where hecould get horses and somebody who can take him to Devkino. At this place Glev met Klimushka (a carriage driver), Glev started criticizing his carriage and horses but finally chose Klim to take him toDevkino. Then on the road, Glev instead of trying to enjoy the ride just started to complain about the space on the carriage and the ride.

After some hours, Glev became suspicious when by surpriseKlim turned to left; they were only going straight on the path they were taking, Glev started telling some lies to Klim in order to show him that he looked wake and thin but that he was very strong andhad guns to fight against anyone, he also told to Klim that there were a lot of people (policemen) watching the road and also four friends that would be meeting him on the forest. Just after this Klimbecame very nervous and abandoned his carriage leaving Glev alone on that dark place. Then Glev felt alone on that dark forest and began calling Klim for a while, Klim answered by telling Glev not tokill him. Glev confessed that those entire things he said were not true and that he did it because he was very scared about Klim. Finally Glev found that he was no longer scared and intimidated byKlim.

Conflict:

Man against himself. Glev was trying to avoid showing he was scared but he could not hide those feeling even when he wanted.
