Pedro Paramo Analysis
Thereis an extremely fragile father-daughter relationship exemplified between the characters, Susana and her father Bartolome, in “Pedro Paramo”. This disgusting, complicated relationship revolved aroundincest and manipulation. At some point in Susana’s father’s life, something tragic happened that caused him to acquire romantic feelings for his own daughter. Susana learned very quickly that at anypoint in their authoritative relationship when she did not get her way she referred to her father in a romantic way and he molded to what she wanted. “Father, please don’t! [in a flirtatiousvoice]…Bartolome…” Susana is seen as an object for sex in the relationship between her and her father but she never once refused the treatment because she knew that if she went along with it, she would benefit.There is a type of abnormal psychological behavior that is expected with victims of incest. “It is argued that incest has its unique negative effects in the domains of self- and social functioning,specifically in jeopardizing self-definition and integration, self-regulatory processes, and a sense of security and trust in relationships” (Cole 174). The correlation between the emotional stress fromincest obviously trickles into Susana’s other relationship in the film. As emotionally stable as she was, her ability to influence Pedro Paramo enforced her underlying authority with him.
