The year 2012 marks a transition to a decade of innovation and industry transformation enabled by the four pillars of technology: cloud service, mobility, social business, and big data/analytics. Previous investments will lay the foundation for an "intelligent economy." CIOs are facedwith significant changes in their enterprise architectures, services, organizations, and partners. This IDC study provides IDC's top 10 predictions for the CIO agenda for 2012. This document offers the views of IDC'sanalysts for major industry transitions and advice to CIOs to consider in their strategic plans.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
The IT industry is leaving an era of IT productivity and cost reductions and entering an era of creation — that is, creation of the intelligent enterprise. In the past decade, server virtualization became a key tool in driving efficiencies in the datacenter, with 90–100%penetrations common by 2011. Meanwhile, computing and storage performance increased dramatically. The combined effect was a tremendous reduction in datacenter floor space. The downstream effect is major datacenter consolidation projects that continue today. Confidence in outsourced services improved throughout the decade, resulting in continued adoption of low-cost outsourcing of applications,infrastructure, and (more recently) services. Other productivity and cost reductions initiatives that have been used in heavy rotation throughout the past 10 years include ERP consolidations, cloud services, desktop virtualization, and extending the life of desktop assets. Completion of these programs will serve to create an efficient IT infrastructure and operations that will be the foundation for thefuture enterprise in an intelligent economy. As we sit down to outline the 10 items that will shape the CIO's agenda in 2012, we do so with this "era of creation" context in mind. To help inform our predictions for 2012, we draw upon the findings from IDC's 2012 CIO Agenda Survey of 90+ CIOs in Europe and North America. This survey was fielded to CIOs and other senior IT executives during Novemberand December 2011. We also develop our predictions within the context of current economic conditions. Our 2012 CIO Agenda Survey suggests softness for IT budgets in the coming year. While 43% of respondents report an increase in their IT budgets in 2012, 31% of respondents report a decrease in their IT budgets (one of the highest numbers we have seen over the years). Most respondents attributetheir budget decreases to a negative outlook for their industry or their particular organization.
