Whenever I think of adapting I think of a way of takingsomething and getting what we can use and disposing the rest. Adapting is not about copying and replicating something that works, but taking it as an example and making it work with our resources and ourneeds.
In management it is basically the same, good managers spot successful management practices and apply them in their organization but making the necessary changes to make them work within theirculture and structure.
But you have to be able to identify which points are appropriate for your organization, and which need some adjustments, because otherwise you can cause a downfall instead ofimproving your performance.
Take for example Mexico, we tend to copy everything we see that works in the US, but we never take in account that we are totally different countries and that we shouldn’ttry to fit those paradigms into our country. We should try to pursue those achievements of course, but we should take a look at Chile, which a few years ago was much more like Mexico, but it ischanging and adapting successful practices into its structure. We need to learn that we need to “blend” those practices with our culture and with our needs, but placing aside the parts that are not adequatefor our current status.
For managerial purposes there are four principles, based on China’s situation nowadays. The first one is to set uncomfortably high aspirations, challenging but realisticaspirations. The second one is to make readjustments frequently and quickly, the third is to be tighter on people and looser in controls, you need to make accommodations to make the hierarchy work, andfourth is to measure learning as much as results, this means that China has potential but the employees’ capabilities are not completely developed because they lack opportunities in China to develop...
