NMON_Consolidator User Guide (V1.6)

Preface

NMON_Consolidator is written and maintained by Stephen Atkins of IBM Systems and Technology Group as a personal project. Support for NMON_Consolidator is provided on a best efforts basis. Please read this user guide before reporting a problem. Excel 2002 Edition (or later) is required.

Several people have requested on Open Office versionof this tool. There are significant problems with doing this because of the relatively limited support for dynamic charts in OO. Any skilled OO developers who want to tackle this problem with me are welcome.

Introduction

NMON_Consolidator reads in up to 255 nmon or topasout files to produce a consolidated set of data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet (requires Excel 2002 or later).

A separate sheet is generated for each majorperformance statistic; graphs are automatically generated showing summary data for each server and for the installation as a whole. The tool allows nodes to be grouped together and will automatically calculate group totals and group averages for each statistic. Because the graphs are pre-defined the user is free to edit the titles, colours and fonts to suit their own requirements and can simply deleteunwanted charts, or entire sheets, to reduce the amount of output.

Administrators who tend partitioned servers will find this tool provides the ability to get an overview of an entire machine "at-a-glance” and provides the opportunity for modelling different partitioning scenarios (e.g. moving dedicated partitions into the shared pool).

The ability to view performance data for all nodes sideby side will be of particular benefit to administrators of clustered applications (e.g. Oracle RAC) and allows the easy identification of load balancing issues.

If all the files processed are from the same LPAR then the trend graphs which are produced by the tool can be useful as input to, or validation of, a capacity plan.

The other major use of this tool will be for modelling server...
