Seto Ohashi Bridge
Seto Ohashi Brigde, also known as The Great Seto Bridge, is located in Japan, connecting the city of Kurashiki, in Honshu Island, with Sakaide, a city in Shikoku Island. Theconstruction rests in five intermediate islands, located in Seto Inland Sea.
The Great Seto Bridge is a complex composed of three suspension bridges, a truss bridge and a traditional steel bridge. With13.1 km length, distributed across two floors, it is the longest of its kind. In the upper board is a toll motorway whose fare is about 3,500 yens. Besides, in the lower board we can find an ordinaryrailway line, including an area reserved to a future high-speed railway line. Crossing the bridge takes about 20 minutes by car or train, much less than the hour spent on travelling by ferry, whichshows another advantage of this bridge.
Its history dates back to 1889, when a member of the Prefectural Parliament suggested the idea of a bridge across Seto Inland Sea. Later, in 1955, 171 lives werelost in a ferry accident crossing this sea. This accident was the turning point to seriously think about building this bridge, so, in 1970, the project was authorized. However, work was postponed forfive years by the oil shock of 1973.
This way, the construction of this architectural wonder started in October, 1978, and ten years later, the bridge opened to road and rail traffic. Regarding tofigures, the most remarkable ones are the cost of the project - about 7 billion dollars -, the 3,646,000 cubic metres of concrete that were used in the work, the 705,000 tons of steel or the 296,000 kmof steel cord that were necessary to construct this bridge. It is prepared to resist winds of 150 km per hour, earthquakes and typhoons.
