ROCKY MOUNTAINS
The Rocky Mountains (or the Rockies) are a major mountain range in western North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 3,000 miles (4,830 km) from the northernmostpart of British Columba, in western Canada, to New Mexico, in the south western United States. Within the North American Cordillera, the Rockies are somewhat distinct from the Pacific CoastRanges and the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada which all lie farther to the west. The Rocky Mountains were formed from 80 million to 55 million years ago during the Laramide orogeny, in which anumber of plates began to slide underneath the North American plate. The angle of subduction was shallow, resulting in a broad belt of mountains running down western North America. Since then,erosion by water and glaciers have sculpted the Rockies into dramatic peaks and valleys. At the end of the last ice age, humans started to inhabit the mountain range. After Europeans, such as SirAlexander MacKenzie and the Lewis and Clark expedition, started to explore the range, minerals and furs drove the initial economic exploitation of the mountains, although the range itself neverbecame densely populated.
Les Muntanyes Rocalloses, o Rocalloses (en anglès, Rocky Mountains, o Rockies) són un sistema de serralades que corre paral·lel a la costa occidental d'Amèrica delNord, des d'Alaska al nord-oest, passant per Canadà i arribant fins al sud-oest dels Estats Units . El bec més alt és la muntanya Elbert a Colorado, amb 4.401 metres. Les Muntanyes Rocallosessi inicien a Alaska, damunt dels quals sí s'estenen prats d'alta muntanya, a les valls si donen cultius agrícoles ‘’Cereals i patates’’. Les Muntanyes Rocoses constitueixen també un notableelement d'atracció turística amb moltes localitats de vacances i d'esports d'hivern.
