At the beginning of the story in act I, several situations are presented which can make the reader infer that things might not turn out so well later on in the plot. In act I, sceneI, the prince interrupts a feud between Capulets and Montagues and he warns them that if the two families do not stop fighting, they will pay with their lives. Also later on in the first act Romeoconfesses that he is sick in love with Rosaline and that this hurts him since she doesn’t love him back in the helpless way that he does, Benvolio, another member of the Montague family, promises he’llhelp him forget about this love. Also, before entering the Capulet mansion, Romeo senses and speaks of danger to come: “Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars/ by some vile forfeit of untimelydeath”.

The prince’s warning to the rival families at the beginning of the play, immediately gives the reader a feeling that things might go wrong if the feud continues. Right from the beginning,since “paying with somebody’s life” is discussed; the reader can infer that things are not going to be perfect and happy from beginning to end (including the fact that the play pretty much opens with aquarrel). Also, almost throughout all of act I, Romeo mentions how madly in love he is with Rosaline, who unfortunately doesn’t feel the same way for him. Romeo mentions how much love hurts, this is yetanother hint for the reader to expect suffering of some kind at some point in the play as well. Even though these two events might give the reader some kind of awareness of bad things happening lateron in the play, none of them is more direct and straightforward than when Romeo speaks of danger to come. He speaks of fateful events that will begin on that night; he also speaks of consequences...
