Getting there
San Pedro is located 1.670 kms north from Santiago de Chile. To get there first you have to reach Calama, the nearest city, which is connected to San Pedro by an excellenthighway and a surprising landscape.
History
It is estimated that about 11.000 years ago the first towns of the north of Chile were founded; they chose the "puna" region and the gorges of the AtacamaDesert.
The "atacameños" (people from Atacama) were the founders of the so called "San Pedro Culture”, they established themselves in the Loa's basing and in all the oases of the Atacama'sdesert. Hand cratt
In concern to the religion, it is known that they believed in life after death and that they buried their deaths with clothing and food for the travel to the other life. They adoreddifferent forces of the Nature. No temples or oratories have been found.
Handicraft
San Pedro has a lot of handicraft, because its elaboration represents an ancestral tradition which has been transmittedfrom generation to generation.
Among their creations we can find fine and beautiful llama, alpaca and cheep weaves.
Another characteristic is the volcanic rock craft which comes from Toconao. Inpottery we can find reproductions from the Atacama Pottery, which is made by the experts’ craftsmen from the zone. The Cactus wood is used to make original bread baskets, lamp shades, musicalinstruments and decorations.
Thing to see
In order to visit all what San Pedro offers, you need to stay at least for 4-5 days in the zone. The distances to San Pedro's attractions are relatively short (lessthan 40 km.) and there are good highways and no pavimented roads.
