Selva Negra

SelvaNegra is located on a coffee estate that also holds some beautiful virgin cloud forest, up in the mountains in Matagalpa.
In the SelvaNegra Restaurant you can find photos, paintings, tools, and more historical items that tell you the story of the German settlers who arrived in Nicaragua in the 19th century and became coffee growers.
Finally, there is a very charming, rustic chapel tuckedaway behind the trees where weddings and baptisms can be organized. There are also two separate conference halls with a total capacity of over 500 people.
Entrance to the resort is about US$5 (consumable in the restaurant) for visitors who come to hike and don't stay overnight.

There are many different activities for the nature enthusiast. First of all, you can hike one (or more) of the 14 mountain hiking trails. The trails range in difficulty and length, but all lead through the dense cloud forest that is home to almost 200 identified bird species. Besides these abundant birds you can alsoencounter small mammals (there is a good chance of spotting howler monkeys), reptiles and amphibians. If you take one of the tougher, steeper hikes you will be rewarded with some splendid views of the city of Matagalpa and the mountains surrounding it.
It is also possible to do horseback riding on the resort and on some of the hiking trails as well.
Furthermore, you can see how coffee is grown andprocessed on the coffee plantation. There are also tours to a greenhouse where flowers grow.
Getting There
The reserve is located on the Matagalpa-Jinotega highway (Km 140). You can get there on your own vehicle. The entrance has signson it. Para conocer Selva Negra, puede iniciar con una excursión en uno (o más) de los 14 senderos de montaña.
