SWING TIME
In the following essay, I am going to take into account the differences as well as the main similarities between Swing Time and a contemporary musical like Moulin Rouge.It is important to bear the time of both musical in mind. Swing Time, dates from the 20th century, exactly in 1936, and on the other hand Moulin Rouge, dates from the 21th century, precisely in2001. What is important about the Moulin Rouge’s date, is the recovery of an old-fashioned film genre, as the musical reached its peak about 30’s. Because of this, Moulin Rouge, recovers this genrewith a unusual vision. So, these two films, dates from different eras, but the genre is the same.
One of the main similarities between the two films is the relationship of love that exists between thetwo protagonists. On one hand, the romantic story that is been living by Lucky ( Fred Astaire) and his lover Penny(Ginger Rogers), and on the other hand, the amazing love story between Christian ( EwanMcGregor) and Satine ( Nicole Kidman).
Both stories also include an unhappy love affair based on a lie. What this mean in both films, the couples have difficulties in living their love story. Theroot of these difficulties is a lie. In both stories the liar is the man. In Swing Time, Lucky lies to his lover because he doesn’t say to Penny his engagement with another girl, Margaret. MoulinRouge’s male protagonist also lies to his lover. Christian pretends to be a millionaire, but the reality is that he is a scrappy man.
The reaction of the women is the same in the two stories: the rejectionof men. So men feel the necessity to recover their lovers, because they are deeply in love with them and men cannot imagine their lifes without these women’s love. It is funny how men try to retrievesomething, in this case the girl, when they have lost them. That is, human beings do not appreciate what they have until they lose it.
