PROHIBITION

Overview of Prohibition
Prohibition was a period in the US history in wich the sale, transportation or manufacture of alcoholic drinks was ilegal. This period started in January 1920,and ended nearly 14 years later. The Constitution supported this law, in fact there was an Amendment created just about the illegality of liquor: the 18th Amendment. This period is also importantbecause it´s the first time that an Amendment is overthrown or repealed and that such a quantity of people broke the law.

Beginning
After the American Revolution, drinking was on the rise. In the19th Century there were a lot of women that discovered thet alcohol was contributing to the problems that the society faced. This is called the “Women movement”. So, a group of people started to beformed. Religious, as well as women became united against alcohol. These organizations wanted to protect people´s health and lifes, sayind that they could get intoxicated.

Beginning the 20th Century,over half of the stated had already created their own laws that prohibited alcohol. It was until 1919 that the government created the Anmendment to ratify the ilegallity.

During the 1920´s, a lot of Movements that supported the alcohol consuption, were created. They sayd that the consumption was a local issue that shoudn´t be in the Constitution.Then, the country was divided between drys and wets: people that supported the 18th Amendment, and people that were against it. The criminalitty and black market was so high that the Government wassearching for a solution to stop this problems.

In addition, after the 1929 Stock Market Crah, people loose their jobs. This started to change people´s opinion. Government saw that if they made alcohollegal again, people would have money, as well as companies. And of course, they could collect a high quantity of taxes.
