Transitive verbs
A transitive verb expresses an action and is followed by an object that receives the action of the verb.
In the following examples, transitive verbs are shown in color anddirect objects of these verbs are
• I washed (what?) the car yesterday.
• I took (whom?) my sister to the movie.
• John studies (what?) English.
The Transitive verb
A transitive verbmust have an object. Without an object, it does not convey a clear meaning.
Example: He bought.
The question inevitably arises: "What did he buy?" No one knows the answer to this question as thereis no direct object to receive the action of the verb 'bought'. The meaning becomes clear when an object is added as follows:
Example: He bought a cake.
The subject of the verb 'He' performs theaction: bought. The object of the action verb 'bought' is a ' cake'
A transitive verb may take an indirect object. An indirect object is something or someone for whom the action is carried out.
Example:He bought her a cake.
The indirect object is 'her' as it's for her that the cake was bought. The indirect object usually precedes the direct object.
Los verbos transitivos son aquellos queejercen su acción sobre una persona o cosa (llamado objeto directo) y que esa persona o cosa NO es la misma que el sujeto.
Por ejemplo
She eats the cake
She (subject) eats (transitive verb) the cake(direct object)
Ella (sujeto) come (verbo transitivo) el pastel (objeto directo)
Para encontrar el objeto directo pregúntate qué más el verbo usado. En este caso ¿qué come ella? R= pastel.
Hewrote a letter
He (subject) wrote (transitive verb) a letter (direct object)
Él (sujeto) escribió (verbo transitivo) una carta (objeto directo).
