Social Groups
In New Spain, Spanish were divided into two types: those born in Spain, were called "peninsulares", and those who were born in America, were called “criollos”. All spanish,“peninsulares” or “criollos were colloquially called "Gachupines".

But although the “criollos” were considered spanish in the law, they had different rights. Since the beginning tensions between “criollos” and“peninsulares” were presented. The “peninsulares” thought “criollos” had a degenerated brain and that they were not as capable as them. The “criollos”, however, insisted that they were the same asthem and that they had the same loyalty to the Crown as any spanish did. Obviously, both “criollos” and “peninsulares” wanted control over indigenous populations and the opportunity to access topolitical power.

While most of New Spain was full of “criollos” nobility and many of them were educated at the University of Mexico and religious schools, there were limits to upward mobility of thisgroup. The Spanish viceroy was always senior and had the Spanish army on his side. On top, white women preferred the “peninsulares” over the “criollos. The marginalization suffered by the “criollos” madethe awakening of the national spirit.

Finally, while most whites had more social opportunities that the rest of the population, there was also poor whites who came to New Spain in the hope ofgetting rich. As a resulto of many of them not getting it, they started dedicating to wander. This were grouped with blacks, mulattos and mestizos.

The clergy is the name given topeople who work for the Church. The clergy was divided into secular and regular.
The secular clergy was responisble for the organzation anf control of the espiritual lives of the laity in the everydayworld. They included priests, bishops, archbishops cardinals and the strict control of the pope.
