OPENING
The opening ceremonies represent the official commencement of a celebration of the Olympic Games.
The ceremonies typically start with the raising of the hostcountry's flag and a performance of its national anthem. The host nation then presents artistic displays of music, singing, dance, and theater representative of its culture, history, and thecurrent Olympic game.
The traditional part of the ceremonies starts with a "Parade of Nations", during which most participating athletes march into the stadium, country by country. It is notcompulsory for athletes to participate in the opening ceremonies.
Each country's delegation is led by a sign with the name of their country and by their nation's flag.
Traditionally, Greeceenters first, due to its historical status as the progenitor of the Olympics, while the host nation marches last.
After all nations have entered, the president of the Organizing Committeemakes a speech.
 At the end of his speech, he introduces the representative of the host country who officially declares the opening of the Games.
They also turn on the torch.
CLOSING
Incontrast to the opening ceremonies, many of the elements of the closing ceremonies are governed more by tradition than official mandate. Usually flag bearers from each participating countryenter the stadium in single file, and behind them march all of the athletes without any distinction or grouping by nationality.
After the athletes enter the stadium, three national flags arehoisted on flagpoles one at a time while the corresponding national anthems are played: the flag of Greece on the middle pole to honor the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the flag of the hostcountry on the left pole, and the flag of the country hosting the next Summer or Winter Olympic Games on the right pole.
The Olympic Flame is extinguished and, the Olympic Hymn is played.
