¿ADÓNDE NOS LLEVA ELDEBATE EN LAS TEORÍAS DEL
FINANCIAMIENTO CORPORATIVO?
RESUMEN
El estado de la investigación en teorías del financiamiento corporativo es desalentador.
Las causas de este estado de cosas deben buscarse en la incorrecta caracterización que la
comunidad académica hizo del proceso por el cual las proposiciones de MM se
convirtieron en la postura dominante en la materia, y en la inadecuada visiónque adoptó
la disciplina respecto a los valores epistémicos a enfatizar.
Fundamentalmente, la Tesis muestra que:
- La evidencia empírica es insuficiente como criterio de evaluación interteórica, ya
que las posturas competidoras en la materia deben ser caracterizadas como
entidades multidimensionales. El debate respectivo debe ser zanjado recurriendo
a enfoques análogos de progresocognitivo.
- Tradeoff exhibe una clara superioridad respecto a las restantes posturas teóricas,
y las mayores chances de consolidarse como la postura dominante.
- Las posturas teóricas en la materia deben contar con dos dimensiones
epistémicas diferenciadas: una científica, que debe reunir características propias
de la ciencia aplicada, y una tecnológica. En cambio, la comunidad académica se
halimitado a formular y testear sus proposiciones como si nuestra disciplina
constituyese una ciencia básica.
- En su estado actual, nuestra disciplina no puede aspirar, ni siquiera, a las
módicas calificaciones de protociencia ni de prototecnología.
Para reorientar este debate, es necesario reconocer el carácter multidimensional de las
distintas posturas teóricas en la materia, y replantear losobjetivos y problemática de la
investigación, teniendo en cuenta el carácter aplicado de su dimensión científica y la
necesidad de nuestra disciplina de contar con una dimensión tecnológica.

¿WHERE IS THE THEORETICAL DEBATE IN CORPORATE
FINANCING LEADING US?
ABSTRACT
The state of the investigation in the field of corporate financing is disappointing. The
causes of this state of affairs are,basically, the incorrect characterization that the
financial community made of the process through which MM propositions became the
mainstream in the discipline, and its inadequate vision regarding the epistemic values to
be emphasized.
Basically, this Thesis shows that:

The empirical evidence is not enough as theoretical evaluation criteria, because
the competingtheories in the field should be characterized as multidimensional
entities. For this reason, we need a multidimensional criteria of cognitive
progress in order to settle the debate among competing theories.
Tradeoff theory shows a clear superiority in comparison with the other
theoretical alternatives, and bigger chances to become the mainstream in the
field.
The theories in the fieldshould have two epistemic dimensions: a scientific one,
which should be endowed with the features of the applied science, and a
technological one. Nevertheless, the academic community has formulated and
tested its theoretical propositions as if our field constitutes a basic science.
In its present state, our discipline cannot even be qualified as a protoscience or as
a prototechnology.

In orderto put the debate in the right track, we need to recognize the multidimensional
nature of the competing theoretical positions and to review the objectives and the set of
problems addressed by the discipline, taking into account the applied nature of its
scientific dimension and the need of our discipline to have a technological one.
