THE DARKLING THRUSH

Pessimistic and gloomy ideas can be represented in many ways, but most impressive is when all that ideas are together with optimism and hopefulness. In thedarkling thrush by Thomas Hardy, all that feelings are mixed forming his reaction about what was coming. This poem published in a new year’s day, the last day of 19th century, shows a desolated winterwith a sense of lifelessness to conclude into a deep author’s reflection.
The poem is composed in four octets, it means eight line stanzas, with a common ABABCDCD rhyme; is written in iambic, the mostpopular in English verse, tetrameter. Since the beginning of the poem the author shows us his current feelings, he starts talking about a desolated and overcast afternoon of winter, where the sun hasalready set and nobody is around because they are in their house, all this introduction makes us think about the coldness of winter and the loneliness of the author, so he is talking to himself. Theentire first stanza reflects the depressed conception and the bad mood the author had in that specific moment.
The second stanza makes us to realize that the specific gloomy moment marks the end ofthe century, there is no more a landscape conception and it seems it becomes into an old corpse, it seems the end of the century is pretty significant for the author, is not as simple as for everybodycan be, for him every life, human, animal etc, is under the death, any vision about the future is not positive at all. On the last part the word fervourless is important, the word fervor reflectsexcitement and maybe good energy but the one used by Hardy just represents he is no enthusiastic at all for the coming change.
The next stanza is less pessimistic, and metrically is the most irregularof the poem maybe because it shows new presences of activeness on the author’s thoughts. While the author was sunk in his thoughts a thrush was singing and he got distracted, and as a light it makes...
