The "Atoms for Peace" Agency
The IAEA is the world's center of cooperation in the nuclear field. It was set up as the world´s "Atoms for Peace" organization in 1957 within the United Nations family. The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies.
Organizational Profile
The IAEA Secretariat is headquartered atthe Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria. Operational liaison and regional offices are located in Geneva, Switzerland; New York, USA; Toronto, Canada; and Tokyo, Japan. The IAEA runs or supports research centers and scientific laboratories in Vienna and Seibersdorf, Austria; Monaco; and Trieste, Italy.
The IAEA Secretariat is a team of 2200 multi-disciplinary professional and supportstaff from more than 90 countries. The Agency is led by Director General Yukiya Amano and six Deputy Directors General who head the major departments.
IAEA programs and budgets are set through decisions of its policymaking bodies - the 35-member Board of Governors and the General Conference of all Member States. Reports on IAEA activities are submitted periodically to the UN Security Council and UNGeneral Assembly.
IAEA financial resources include the regular budget and voluntary contributions. The annual regular budget is set by the General Conference, as well as extra budgetary funds and voluntary contributions to the Technical Co-operation Fund.
IAEA Mission & Programs
The IAEA's mission is guided by the interests and needs of Member States, strategic plans and the visionembodied in the IAEA Statute. Three main pillars - or areas of work - underpin the IAEA's mission: Safety and Security; Science and Technology; and Safeguards and Verification.
Relationship with United Nations
As an independent international organization related to the United Nations system, the IAEA´s relationship with the UN is regulated by special agreement. In terms of its Statute, the IAEAreports annually to the UN General Assembly and, when appropriate, to the Security Council regarding non-compliance by States with their safeguards obligations as well as on matters relating to international peace and security.

IAEA Departments
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications helps countries use nuclear and isotopic techniques to promote sustainable development objectives inagriculture, human health, water resource management, marine environment and industrial applications.
The Department of Nuclear Energy fosters the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting nuclear programs around the world, catalyzing innovation and building capability in energy planning, analysis, and nuclear information and knowledge.
The Department of Nuclear Safety works to providea strong, sustainable and visible global nuclear safety and security framework, protecting people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
The Department of Safeguards carries out the duties and responsibilities of the IAEA as the world’s nuclear inspectorate, performing an indispensable role in global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.
The Department ofTechnical Cooperation helps countries to improve their scientific and technological capabilities in the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, thus contributing to sustainable development.
Fukushima Nuclear Accident
On 15 March the Japanese government requested assistance from the IAEA in the areas of environmental monitoring and the effects of radiation on human health, asking for IAEAteams of experts to be sent to Japan to assist local experts. A food safety assessment team was sent, as well as experts in boiling water reactor technology, and a marine expert.
IAEA Food Safety Assessment Team presented its report to the Japanese Cabinet Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
