Have you ever wondered if jealousy can beat love? Well in the story “The Lady or the Tiger” by Frank Stockton it does make you wonder. This story is abouta semi barbaric princess that is in love with a young man and the king finds out. He decides to put the young man into the arena where he will have to choose between two doors; one has a beautifulwoman behind it and the other a hungry tiger. The princess finds out in which door has what in it and she also finds out who is the woman. She hates that woman because she had seen her talking to herlover. She has to choose which door she wants her lover to open and the author gives you the liberty to choose. I think that she chose the door that the tiger stood behind.
It was clear that theprincess sent her lover to the tiger’s door because she hated the other woman. In the book it clearly says “she hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind that silent door” (598). You can know by thatsentence that she obviously did not want her lover to marry the other lady. It also says “Would it not be better to die at once and go to wait for her in the blessed regions of semi barbaricfuturity?” (599). So here it is saying that she would prefer for him to die and then wait for her to die so they could be together. Another reason you can distinctly tell that she chose the door with thetiger is because she is semi barbaric. It says in the book “This semi barbaric king had a daughter…” (596). If she is semi barbaric then she won’t mind shedding a little blood. Finally there are twoparagraphs supporting the fact that she would choose the door with the tiger. These two paragraphs say that when she thought of her lover marrying the other lady she tore her hair and gnashed her teeth butwhen she thought of her lover being eaten alive she only put her head in her hands. This shows that she thought and felt that her lover marrying that woman would be way worse than him dying.
