the construction of the Pisa tower was developed in three stages during a period of 200 años.la construction of the first marble plant began the 9 of August of 1173, in aperiod of military success and prosperity. the first plant is surrounded by pillars with classic capitals and blind arcs.

controversy exists on the identity of the architect: during many years thedesign attributed guglielmo and bonanno pisano, a resident well-known artist in Pisa in century xii, famous by its fused bronze pieces, particularly in the Pisa duomo. bonanno pisano left Pisa in1185 and only marched to monreale, Sicily, returning after its death. its coffin went shortage on the foot of the tower in 1820.

after the third plant in 1178 was constructed, the tower inclinedtowards the north, due to weak foundations (three meters), in an unstable subsoil. the design of this tower was imperfect from its beginning and its construction stopped during a century, due to the warsbetween the neighboring pisanos and states. this lapse allowed the ground to be based, otherwise the tower would have collapsed.

in 1272 the construction was retaken by giovanni I gave simone,architect author of the cementery. those were added then to four new plants that were constructed with certain angle in order to resist the inclination. the construction paused again in 1284 after thedefeat of Pisa on the part of the genoveses in the battle of meloria.

only in 1372 tommasso I gave to andrea pisano constructed to the last plant (the bell tower) and the bells were installed. it isconsidered that its intervention harmonically combines the gothic elements of the bell tower with the style Romanesque of the tower. the bells are seven, corresponding each to a note of the musicalscale; the major of them was installed in 1655. nevertheless, after the conclusion of the bell tower, the tower began to incline, this time towards the south.
